Trusting God’s Wisdom Over Human Advice
Summer Roberts is a modern-day Joseph who not only studies and memorizes God’s Word but who takes it to heart. The verses she learned in Awana at Liberty Baptist Church in Hartwell, Georgia, are not just head knowledge but translate into practical action every day.
“Learning God's Word has benefited me in many ways,” said Summer, who participated in Awana from Sparks (for kindergarten to second grade) through Journey (our high-school program). “The verses I memorized have come back to my mind in the middle of temptation, and they helped me to believe that God is real, that He loves me and that He has a plan for my life.”
Summer found the curriculum for Journey especially rewarding.
“Doing the Bible summaries helped to solidify in my mind what I read and summed up what the books were all about,” she said. “It wasn't easy – it was challenging! But any young person who works at it can do it. Reading the Scriptures daily became a habit and continues to be a blessing to me.”
Most importantly, Summer attributes her salvation to her knowledge of God’s Word.
“Learning verses about how I could be saved when I was a child gives me the assurance that I am saved now. Those Scriptures also give me courage as I share my faith with other people around me,” Summer said.
Trusting in God no matter what
The verses not only give her courage to share her faith but to stand firm in her beliefs even when others don’t agree.
“These past two years I had lots of well-meaning people who tried to tell me that waiting to discern God's will for my life was foolish,” Summer confided. “They would laugh at the way I trusted my parents to give me good advice, and they said I should disregard my parents’ advice and ‘go my own way.’
“I remembered the verses in Proverbs 3:5-6 that say: Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. That passage taught me the foolishness of relying on my own wisdom to make the choices in my life and the wisdom of depending on the Lord to help me know what to do.”
By becoming living and loving examples of the Christian faith, her parents, Tim and Linda, made a lasting impression.
“I saw them live out the things we were learning at church, and it made Jesus, the Bible and Christianity real to me,” Summer said. “They didn't just talk about God's love; they would demonstrate it to me through being merciful and kind every day. I first experienced grace from them, and that made me long to experience God's grace.”
The combination of Summer’s time in Awana and the influence of godly parents has clearly helped her to trust in the Lord with all her heart and to maintain a modern-day Joseph faith.
